The Immortal Fah'rin
"We have existed since before the dawn of time itself. Our elders have shaped the rise and fall of the very stars themselves in the cycle of life and death from which we are so nearly immune. A Fah'rin juvenille has both superior wisdom and talent to a thousand of your species in a thousand of your fleeting lifetimes... The idea that you could best me in combat is laughable. Go home humans. Surrender to your fate, for in the time it takes me to blink you will be dead whether I choose to act or otherwise." -- Tsurm'n, Eldred Secondborn Warrior of the Fah'rin addressing the UN fleet prior to the naval battle over Pluto. 40,000 confirmed human fatalities.
Overview
Fah'rin, frequently dubbed "The Immortals" by their alien neighbours, are near immune to the ravages of time, boasting lifespans with no known natural end. Death by accident, disease or violence may yet overcome this gifted perseverance and so the Fah'rin tend to be peaceful people focussed on the pursuit of knowledge or the mastery of a trade and live highly independent lives.
Biology
Fah'rin are a humanoid race who exhibit trimorphism distinct to each of the three sexes which they call Yu-tah, Xah-tah and Xel-ton. All sexes bear smooth grey skin at birth most comparable in human knowledge in both appearance and texture to soft leather then develop a coloured zebra-like stripe for each sexual cycle they pass through until their body is entirely the colour of the stripes they develop. The colour of the stripes is unique to the sex of the individual and as the speed of each sexual cycle along with the duration between cycles varies wildly between individuals the amount of stripes is a poor indicator of an individuals age. Yu-tah develop blue stripes, Xah-tah develop green stripes and Xel-ton develop red stripes.
Sexual trimorphism does not end at coloured stripes for Fah'rin. Each of the three sexes plays a different role in the development of a Fah'rin child and so is adapted to suit their purpose. Xel-ton are responsible for carrying the child in it's early stages of development inside a marsupial style pouch and so are the largest of the three sexes by far, ranging between 2.2 ( 7.4ft) and 2.5 (8.2) metres tall. Yu-tah and Xah-tah are significantly smaller, ranging between 1.2 (4ft) to 1.6 metres (5ft) and 1.6 to 1.8 metres (6ft) tall respectively. Yu-tah are responsible for the production of the seed to fertilize an Xah-tah's egg as well as the feeding of the young when they initially emerge from the Xel-ton's pouch for which they have a specialised set of mandibles to hold the youth in place whilst food is administered orally. Xah-tah produce the egg for the Yu-tah to fertilise which is then incubated in the Xel-ton's pouch. The Xah-tah is also responsible for production of the insulation and feeding gel for the youth whilst they are in the Xel-ton's pouch and again have a pair of mandibles adapted to aid in orally administering the gel. Xel-ton do not have mandibles
Fah'rin possess four eyes arranged in a downward pointing in a chevron formation across the face. The innermost set of eyes are akin in appearance and purpose to human ones whilst the outer set register thermal energy and appear to be shut at all times. Fah'rin have no nose, relying instead upon an exceptionally strong sense of taste to use for smelling whilst they breathe through their mouths. The Fah'rin do not have hair, instead possessing bony spines to protect exposed portions of their head from the elements, the growth of these spines tends to be controlled by an individual by wrapping lengths of embossed wire around spines until the desired pattern of growth is achieved. Uncontrolled these spines would simply grow into a crude, bony impersonation of a porcupine.
