What chris wrote up so far:
Magic
+The nature of ones magic is usually innate. E.g. You are innately a telekinetic or a pyro elemental 'magician'. One faction has overcome this limitation and so can pick any ability but at great cost (cost tbc)
+Magic is controlled by the electrical impulses in the brain and very strongly connected to the subconscious. As such it can be employed the same way you would an arm or a leg with practice. It can even be reflexive (which can be the cause of many accidents). The fact it is so strongly linked to the subconscious can make it unreliable too. Even if the conscious mind is telling the body to fight if the subconscious thinks flight the magic will not work correctly.
+ambient Magic energy is channeled and amplified from the surroundings into and through a person by physical "conduits" which can take the guise of tattoos or garments, even carried items. It is not impossible to use magic without a conduit but it is rare and difficult. Channeling this ambeint energy is not dissimilar to being exposed to radiation and so tires the body over time and is believed to cause long term damage. The effects are poorly understood amongst some human communities.
+Magic was only recently discovered (relatively speaking) as humanity began to encounter ruins from long dead civilisations. Humanity is in fact the most attuned race to magic
Personally I'm not in biggest favours of limiting it to only being able to do one thing e.g. pyrokineses or telepathy etc.
The fluff of using conduits to channel the magic-like radiation is pretty good though.
We need a more sciency name than magic though.
