"From earthdate October the 24th 1945 the United Nations has bourne upon it's shoulders the fate of mankind, protected it's interests and it's freedoms from what was once mankind's worst enemy, mankind itself. Be wary now, for mankind is no longer alone in the stars, but fear not. The UN will remain true to it's mandate, carrying forth the interests of humankind into this new era of discovery, peace and prosperity. Separate, but united. Freedom preserved through federal government." -- Xaing Yanseed, Secretary General of the United Nations addressing the General Assembly. Earthdate 2073.
The oldest of the known and prominent human factions, the United Nations has evolved from it's humble roots managing the nations of a single planet to a galactic superpower, it's name a mere legacy dating to it's foundation in 1945. To this day it continues to strive for the achievement of it's original mandate, this is to:
- Deliver humanitarian aid
- Promote sustainable development
- Uphold international law
- Maintain international peace and security
- Protect human rights
In late earthdate 2070 this mandate was expanded to include:
- Govern interspecies relations
By the year 2140 the expansion of humanity is such that; in spite of possessing the largest standing military humanity has ever known, the UN is enormously overstretched. By necessity the UN's focus has become 'foreign policy', working to ensure peace between humanity and it's splinter factions as well as the numerous forms of alien life that have been encountered since first contact. As such the governance of humans within UN space is largely devolved to the enormous number of states and corporations that the UN recognises as powerful and enough to manage such responsibilities. In short, UN space has become a largely ungoverned, capitalist utopia.
